Office of Exceptional Children

The mission of the Exceptional Children’s Department is to provide equal access to free, appropriate, public education (FAPE) opportunities for students with disabilities. The staff aims to protect from discrimination against students with disabilities; guaranteeing access to free, appropriate public education. Special Education must meet the unique needs of the child and prepare him or her for further education and independent living.
Calhoun County Public Schools offers a full continuum of special education programs and services. Services may include small group or individualized instruction, assistive technology, and rehabilitation aids such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Children may qualify for services through identification in one or more of the following areas of disability:
Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Developmental Delay
Emotional Disability
Intellectual Disability (Mild, Moderate, Severe)
Multiple Disabilities
Orthopedic Impairment
Other Health Impaired
Specific Learning Disability
Speech or Language Impairment
Traumatic Brain Injury
Visual Impairment

Our high school students participated in work related opportunities with South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Center of Orangeburg. This opportunity allows our students the chance to gain employment experiences as a student. This opportunity could pave the way for possible full-time employment once the student exits Calhoun County High School.
